The Woodcutter - A FableAuthor's note: I was told this fable many years ago by one
of my coaches.I retell it here in his memory, hoping it impacts
you as well, and as positively, as it did me. <ms>
The traveler tried to engage the woodcutter in conversation but the woodcutter, huffing and puffing, said to the traveler "I don't mean to be rude sir, but I must keep working or I will not get this wood finished on time." The traveler sympathized with him and wished he could find a way to make the woodcutter's job easier. The traveler saw that the woodcutter was indeed cutting a lot of wood, but he was expending so much effort doing it. Then he noticed that the woodcutter's axe seemed somewhat dull and rusty. He asked the woodcutter "Why don't you stop and sharpen your axe?" The woodcutter kept chopping and huffing and said "Don't be ridiculous! How can I take the time to sharpen my axe when I have so much wood to cut!" |
